Greeting from Gene Gross, the Head of School Legacy Stewardship Sustainability
Although Benjamin has grown tremendously in size and now has two campuses, the school’s values remain consistent. We want students to be delighted and inspired when they learn so learning becomes self-perpetuating. We nurture students and help them to embrace the challenge of being independent, yet collaborative learners, who channel the fruits from both into active participation in the life of the school and our broader democratic society. Different backgrounds, passions, and goals comprise our community and blend into a pattern of accomplishment and success. Faculty and staff devoted to the intellectual and personal development of each child are Benjamin’s greatest asset. Students are given meaningful and formidable intellectual tasks by teachers who know that children develop at differing rates. Benjamin measures success rigorously, yet insightfully. We encourage students to go beyond academics and develop expertise, utilize different talents, and express their deepest feelings through the arts and athletics. Our faculty and staff joyfully share their wisdom and compassion with children and their families, forging open communication and partnership. While our program is exemplary, we cannot live up to our motto of “Second to None,” without constant assessment. This year at Benjamin, we are undertaking the self-examination necessary for a new Strategic Plan. A key element in shaping that plan will be sustainability – both as an independent school and as a conscientious member of the global community. To be a viable independent school, sustainability means, among other things, making ourself more reflective of the world at large – more diverse. As a member of the global community, sustainability means stewarding our students so they will view their lives in terms of how individuals impact an increasingly fragile environment. Our school-wide theme, adopted last year: “Honoring our legacy: A commitment to stewardship for a sustainable future,” will guide us as we shape our next Strategic Plan and will help to keep our school constantly anticipating and responding to emerging needs and opportunities. As you visit our website, keep in mind that 100% of our graduates go to college every year, but The Benjamin School legacy means our nest is never empty. I hope you will become intrigued enough by what you see here to seriously consider our school for your child. At Benjamin, you’ll find a challenging, caring, compassionate family that will become an extension of your own. Sincerely, Eugene Gross |
