January 11, 2007
Dear Upper School Parents,
Happy New Year!! I hope you and your family had a wonderful holiday season. We are up and running for the second semester. Enclosed are the grade reports for the first semester. Please take some time to review your child’s performance and work with him or her to set reasonable goals for the coming grading period.
I want to extend a special thanks to the Senior Class, its advisors, and the many underclassmen that helped make the Holiday Party for the children from the Hispanic Human Resource Center such a great success. On Monday, December 18th, more than 55 four and five year-olds spent the morning celebrating the holidays with our students here on campus. If you haven’t checked out the pictures on the Upper School webpage, please take a minute to do so.
There is lots of activity in the coming weeks in the Upper School. Juniors and their parents will meet Thursday evening, January 18th with the college counselors and admission representatives from several colleges and universities. The program begins at 7:00 p.m. in the Barker Performing Arts Center on the Kehl campus. This will formally begin the college search process for the Class of 2008. On Friday, January 19th the Junior Class will have their team building activity at FAU’s Boca campus. Details and paperwork are going out in a separate mailing. That Friday is also Senior skip day with seniors not required to attend classes that day.
Sophomores and their parents will have a meeting on Monday evening, January 22nd, to learn more about the college search process. The program in the Barker Performing Arts Center on the Kehl campus begins at 7:00 p.m. and will include information about the course selection process, college counseling and interpretation of PSAT scores. On Tuesday, January 23rd, the sophomore class will have their team building day. Sophomores should report to school at the regular time and meet in the gym for attendance and instructions at 8:00 a.m. Following that they will be transported by school bus to Loggerhead Park for their team building program. Dress for that day is casual and should include clothes that can get wet. Towels, sunscreen and a hat are also recommended. Lunch will be provided for the sophomores that day and they will return to campus by 2:00 for dismissal.
The Student Council sponsored Snow Ball Dance is Saturday, January 27th from 8:00-11:00 p.m. at Embassy Suites. This is a semi-formal dance with dressy outfits for the ladies and jacket and tie for the gentlemen. As always the dance is drug and alcohol free and all students and their guests must have signed drug and alcohol pledge forms. Parents are expected to support this by not providing or allowing alcohol at pre- or post- dance activities.
We have two evening programs that I encourage you to attend. On Thursday, January 25th, Dr. Paul Gray will talk about the Human and Natural History of the Okeechobee Watershed and on Wednesday, January 31st, Dr. Izzy Kalman will talk on ‘Bullies to Buddies’. Both programs are being held in the Barker Performing Arts Center and begin at 7:00 p.m. I hope you will take advantage of these outstanding speakers.
Thank you for your support.
Sincerely,
Jay Selvig
Head of Upper School
